  • Now, a new Connection is created on your desktop.
  • To connect to FOL, double click on the connection that is created on your desktop and Click on Connect.

Windows 2000

Since you are about to install a driver, you will need administrative privileges to perform the installation. If you are logged on to a user account, log off and log on to an account with administrative privileges before proceeding.
  • Unpack the downloaded archive to a temporary installation directory. Make sure that the all the files are correctly extracted
  • Right-click the My Network Places icon on your desktop and select Properties to bring up the Network and Dial-up Connections window.
  • Go to the menu and select View then Details to get a detailed view of the network connections on your machine.
  • You should find one or more Local Area Connection objects. Locate the one for the network adapter connected to your broadband modem (you should be able to tell by the name in the Device Name column).
  • Right-click it and select Properties.
  • In the properties dialog box, click the Install... button.
  • In the Select Network Component Type window, select Protocol and click the Add... button. (Note: It could take a few seconds for the following window to come up.
  • In the Select Network Protocol window, click the Have Disk... button.
  • In the Install From Disk window, either type the name of your temporary installation directory or click the Browse... button to navigate to it (it does not matter which of the INF files you select, Windows will automatically pick the right one later).
  • Then click the OK button. A new window opens, offering the PPP over Ethernet Protocol for installation.
  • Click OK to start installing the protocol.
  • During installation, a window titled Digital Signature Not Found may come up several times (typically four times per installed network adapter), warning you that the driver has no digital signature or Windows Logo. Make sure you click "Yes" or "Continue Anyway" every time you are prompted to allow successful installation of the protocol.
Now for Creating PPP over Ethernet Dial-Up Connections;
  • PPP over Ethernet dial-up connections can be most conveniently created with the Dial-Up Connection Setup application provided with the protocol, which creates dial-up connections with all the correct settings at the click of a button.
  • Click the Start button on the taskbar and select Run... to bring up the Run dialog box.
  • Type RASPPPOE in the edit field and click the OK button to run the Dial-Up Connection Setup application.
  • If the application quits with an error message, follow the advice it gives.
  • A dialog box comes up with a combo box labeled Query available PPP over Ethernet Services through Adapter: at the top. Select the network adapter your broadband modem is connected to from the list. If the protocol is only operating on one network adapter, the box will be grayed out as there is no choice to make.
  • Generally, it is recommended that you create a connection for an adapter, not for a specific service, so that it continues to work even if your service provider changes the server or service name. To do this, simply click the Create a Dial-Up Connection for the selected Adapter button now. Shortly afterwards, a shortcut to the new dial-up connection named Connection through Adapter Name should show up on your desktop.
  • After you have created the connection(s) you need, click the Exit button to quit the application.
  • Double-click the desktop icon for the dial-up connection you created.
  • In the Connect Connection Name window, enter your user name and password if your service provider requires authentication.
  • Click on the Dial button. If all goes well, you should be connected to the Internet almost instantly.
Windows 98

In windows 98, the installation requires a reboot to finish, so you are advised to save your work and close all running applications before proceeding. During installation, you may be prompted to insert your Windows CD-ROM, so please have it ready in case you need it. If you have a preconfigured machine with the Windows installation files residing on your hard drive, you will not need the CD-ROM. Make sure that the Dial-Up Networking components of Windows 98 are available before installing PPPoE protocol.
  • Unpack the downloaded archive to a temporary installation directory. Make sure that the all the files are correctly extracted
  • Right-click the Network Neighborhood or the My Network Places (Windows ME) icon on your desktop and select Properties.
  • Click the Add... button.
  • In the Select Network Component Type window, select Protocol and click the Add button.
  • In the Select Network Protocol window, click the Have Disk... button.
  • In the Install From Disk window, either type the name of your temporary installation directory or click the Browse... button to navigate to it.
  • Then click the OK button.
  • A new window opens, offering two options for installation. Make sure you select the correct option for the operating system you are running.
  • Select PPP over Ethernet Protocol (Windows 98/ME) if you are running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium Edition.
  • Click OK to start installing the protocol.
  • NOTE: If you get an error message saying "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware" despite having picked the correct option and despite having a properly installed Ethernet network adapter, Windows may have a problem with the installation path. Try moving the installation files to a directory with a short name without any special characters, e.g. C:\RASPPPOE, and installing the protocol from there.
  • Click the OK button to close the Network Configuration window and confirm to reboot.
  • Now for Creating PPP over Ethernet Dial-Up Connections;
  • Click the Start button on the taskbar and select Run... to bring up the Run dialog box.
  • Type RASPPPOE in the edit field and click the OK button to run the Dial-Up Connection Setup application.
  • Double-click the desktop icon for the dial-up connection you created.
  • In the Connect To window, enter your user name and password if your service provider requires authentication.

What is the “Internet”?
The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).
It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

What is World Wide Web (WWW)?
The WWW is one of the spaces in which the Internet is subdivided (shortly defined WWW or Web). In this way during the consultation a user can pass from a document to the other without taking care of the place where the respective servers physically are. The protocol for this aim is HTTP. The WWW documents are usually called pages; and can contain text and graphics, the whole co-ordinate by a specific language, called HTML, codifying the different objects. The reading program is called browser;. A connection present on a Web page can also point, besides another document, at a file in any shape (images, audio, video, and so on); at the "click" of the mouse it will be automatically reproduced or by the browser or by external applications. The three main components of World Wide Web are hypertexts, Internet and multimedia contents of documents.

What is a URL?
URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. URL is the address for a resource or site (usually a directory or file) on the World Wide Web and the convention that web browsers use for locating files and other remote services.
Here are some examples of URL's:
  • http://www.fol.com.np [ This is a web page at a commercial site called FOL]
  • ftp://capital.net/home/u [ (or the first letter of your username)/username/www/ ] This is the directory you would use to upload your personal web page.
  • news:rec.gardens.roses [ This is a newsgroup on rose gardening. ]
The first part of a URL tells you the type of resource (or method of access) at that address.
  • http - a hypertext document or directory
  • gopher - a gopher document or menu.
  • ftp - a file available for downloading or a directory of such files
  • news - a newsgroup.
  • telnet - a computer system that you can log into from across the Internet.
  • WAIS - a database or document on a WAIS (Wide Area Information Search) database.
  • file - a file located on a local drive (like your hard drive).
The second part of a URL is typically the address of the computer where the data or service is located. Additional parts may specify the names of files, the port to connect to, or the text to search for in a database.
Here are a couple of other important things to remember about URLs:
  • A URL has no spaces.
  • A URL always uses forward slashes (//).
  • If you enter a URL incorrectly, your browser will not be able to locate the site or resource you want.
  • You can find the URL behind any link by passing your mouse pointer over the link. The pointer will turn into a hand and the URL will appear in the browser's status bar.
What programs can I use to browse the WWW?
A Web (Internet) Browser is a software application that allows you to browse the World Wide Web (WWW). An Internet Browser basically interprets the programming language (HTML) of the Internet into the words and graphics that you see when viewing a web page. Some of the popular browsers are Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Opera etc.

What is 'TCP/IP'?
TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This is the language governing communications between all computers on the Internet. TCP/IP is a set of instructions that dictates how packets of information are sent across multiple networks. Also included is a built-in error-checking capability to ensure that data packets arrive at their final destination in the proper order.
IP, or Internet Protocol, is the specification that determines where packets are routed to, based on their destination address. TCP, or Transmission Control Protocol, makes sure that the packets arrive correctly at their destination address. If TCP determines that a packet was not received, it will try to re-send the packet until it is received properly.
You must be running TCP/IP to have full Internet access. In Unix, TCP/IP is part of the operating system. In the DOS and Windows world, the functionality of TCP/IP is handled by Winsock. This piece of software takes care of your TCP/IP configuration information. On a Mac, you would use Apple's TCP/IP.

What is a proxy server?
Proxy server is meant to improve the access speed of Internet. A proxy server improves browsing performance by functioning as a caching server. Using its cached web pages, the proxy server serves already-accessed web pages to requesting users without requiring outside access to the Internet.

What does ‘PPP’ connection mean?
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) is a communications protocol used to transmit network data over telephone lines. PPP allows you to connect your computer to the Internet itself, rather than logging on through an Internet Service Provider's host computer and using UNIX commands through a shell. This type of connection lets you communicate directly with other computers on the network using TCP/IP connections. It is part of the TCP/IP suite of programs necessary to connect to and use the Internet.
